Target Audience
"In marketing and advertising, a target audience, or target group is the primary group of people that something, usually an advertising campaign, is aimed at appealing to. A target audience can be people of a certain age group, gender, marital status, etc. (ex: teenagers, females, single people, etc.) A certain combination, like men from twenty to thirty is often a target audience. Other groups, although not the main focus, may also be interested."
Audience Demographics & Psychcographics
Audience demographics have been catagorised in terms of career and income like so:
A: Higher management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals.
B: Middle management, teachers, creative and media people e.g. graphic designers.
C1: Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff - white collar.
C2: Skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders - blue collar.
D: Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers.
E: Unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers.
Most music videos are aimed at students, however with such a wide range of genres, the target audience can be any of these demographics. My music video will be generally aimed at students in the 'E' band, and creative and media people in the 'B' band
Psychographics
Mainstreamers - Seek Security, domestic, conventional, favour value for money family brands, nearly always the largest groups.
Aspirers - Seek Status, materialistic, orientated to image and appearance, persona and fashion. Typically younger people, clerical sales jobs.
Succeeders - Seek Control, strong goals, confidence, work ethic and organisation. typically higher management and professionals.
Resigned - Seeks Survival, rigid and authoritarian, interested in past and tradition. Typically older people.
Explorers - Seeks Discovery, energy and experience, values difference and adventure, first to try new brands. Younger demographic, could be students.
Strugglers - Seeks Escape, alienated and disorganised, few resources beyond physical skills, buys alcohol, junk food, lottery tickets, D and E demographic.
Reformers - Seeks Enlightenment, freedom of restriction and personal growth, anti-materialistic, has attended higher education and selects products for quality.
The audience for my music video will most likely be young people, aged 16-35, although it could attract older audiences, perhaps people in careers who can relate to the feeling of wanting to escape from the dreariness of everydy life. I think the element of romance will attract couples of most ages. I have added polls to my blog so I am able to collect data straight from my audience. This will help me work out exactly who my target audience are.
