Here are the lyrics, and the bolded sections are ones particularly relevant to my video:
It's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind
The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat
But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck
And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again
Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind
So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears
But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck
And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again
So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's land
So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say
Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be
And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck
And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again
and here is the official video
I did some research on the website 'www.songmeanings.net' in which the lyrics to a song are posted and users can disucss what they think the artist is trying to portray. A lot of the user comments are relevant to what I personally portray the song as, and what I have based my music video around. For instance, one user writes;
"This song reminds me of leaving behind fears, gaining the courage to go out and really live life the way that was intended. Going out and exploring the land, becoming independent (yet dependent on the land).but I see it as being about finding your own voice in the world; abandoning your restraints, finding strength in your faults and shortcomings, and ultimately doing what is best for YOU."
Senses of 'leaving behind fears' and 'finding your own voice in the world' are precisely what I am trying to make the audience feel with this video, and this appears to be the general feeling of what the lyrics mean, so I am confident with the song choice and that this will work.
Another good example is another comment;
""The cave" is a sort of metaphor for being held back. He sings, "come out of your cave walking on your hands, and see the world hanging upside down". In the final thirty seconds of the song, the person professes his need for freedom, and is not going to listen to what the others will be singing; he is finally living his life for himself"
The climax of my video is the protagonist deciding not to go back to her old life and shaking off all of the fears from it; she is completely free. This is exactly what this user comments about the lyrics of the song, they are written to show a man 'finally living life for himself' which is how my video will end.
