- Escapism/Freedom
The main narrative of my story is that of a girl who lives in a repressed word that she hates, and finally gets the courage to escape from and feel complete freedom for the first time ever. The different locations used in my video will reinforce the idea of how much freedom she has, in that she can explore everything she wants to.
- Fear/Pressure
The climax of my video is the decision the protagonist has to make when faced with the pressure of an unknown force - perhaps her conscience - reminding her that she doesnt belong where she is and she needs to go back.
- Plato's allegory of 'The Cave'
Plato imagines a group of people who have lived chained in a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Plato, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to seeing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not constitutive of reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.
The lyric, "come out of your cave walking on your hands, and see the world hanging upside down" reflects this allegory, and shows that the reality of what the protagonist thinks the world is like, and what it transpires to be like are very different.
I think a good example of this lyrically, is
"now let me at the truth, which will refresh my broken mind"
This shows that the protagonist is eager to be released, both from the cave in Plato's allegory, and the character stuck in the other world in my music video.
